Lake Annecy in the Rhone Alps provides fantastic riding, with as many challenges as you could wish for on a bike, as well as a setting that is incomparable.

This week is based on the edge of the lake in the old town of Annecy. Annecy is described as France’s little Venice for good reason, with canals and spectacular architecture running throughout the old town. Even without a bike this location provides opportunities for everyone to enjoy. This location is ideal for riders and partners.

With flat rides around or along the lake on secure trails, even non riders can enjoy this location. Added to the riding are the many other attactions of the area that do not require a bike and a great week can be guaranteed.

For the committed riders though, climbs such as the Saleve, the Forclaz and the Semnoz will challenge and thrill. The descent of the Semnoz to the heart of the Old Town in Annecy is one of the highlights of the week. Then its time to savour the cuisine and a cleansing ale.

So what are the options?

Tour du Lac d’Annecy

This is a 40 kilometre round trip on a trail free from vehicles. Take a rest break at Talloire for a coffee and enjoy the view. Then its on with the ride following the lake all the way. Take your swimmers because even though its an alpine lake the water is very warm, usually around 24 degrees in summer.

Traversee du Semnoz

This route follows the lake to a point just past Sevrier and then climbs to the village of Leschaux where the climb really starts, taking you over the Semnoz at 1670 meters. All up its a 51 kilometer round trip with 1220 meters of climbing. The hotel at the summit is a welcome rest spot for a coffee or a beer with the best view of the alps in the area. The descent back to the old town of Annecy is a highlight.

Ciruit du Saleve

The Saleve is a mountain range running between Annecy and Geneva. From Annecy we take the route to the historic Pont de la Caille over the Usses river. From here we start the climb of the Saleve leaving the lovely village of Cruseilles and climbing through the forrest to the plateau. There is 1460 meters of climbing on this circuit so it is a testing ride, but well worth it when you see the views on offer either side of the Saleve. If you look left you see Lake Geneva and the town of Geneva. If you look right you see straight across to Mont Blanc and the alps. Its a 106 kilometer round trip and you will love every kilometer of it.

Col de la Forclaz

This is a 50 kilometer ride with ‘only’ 700 meters of climbing! However it is a very testing 700 meters. The final 2 kilometers are at 14%, but the view from the top back over Lake Annecy more than compensates for the effort. Then its a great descent back to the lake and roll home on the lake trail.

Other riding options exist for the more adventurous, but if you are wanting to rest your legs Annecy will look after  you as well. The old town is described as France’s mini Venice for a good reason. With its canals and historic buildings it is stunningly beautiful. With plenty of cafes, restaurants and shops there is plenty to keep you occupied in the town. Other options are tours in nearby areas including Geneva which is only 35 kilometers away.
