Tour Pyrenees
Our Tour Pyrenees starts and finishes in Toulouse.
But in between you will have conquered many of the legendary climbs of the Pyrenees – Tourmalet, Peyresourde, Aspin, Portillon, Port d’Envalira, Coll del Canto… and on it goes through France, Andorra and Spain.
Apart from the transfer to our start point in Foix on day 1 and your return to Toulouse at the culmination of the tour, the rest of the tour is spent riding your bike!
The roads are quiet, the mountains spectacular and the riding incomparable.
And this year we have the added bonus of being in Foix to see the Tour de France finishing in the shadows of the Chateau de Foix after a 192km race from Limoux. After settling into our hotel it will be time to unpack the bikes and go for a roll around the village to check out the history and find a spot to watch the race. The town square will definitely be the place to be that afternoon and evening to soak up the atmosphere and enjoy a meal.
The next day we ride into Andorra on a route well trodden by the Tour de France. Our target is Port d’Envalira and we get to that climb after following streams and valleys out of France. This is a steady climb from Ax-Les-Thermes past Pas de la Casa to the summit at 2409 meters. We stay at Pas de la Casa that night so its a short roll back to our hotel followed by a stroll around the best duty free shopping in Europe!
The next day we are off to Spain after a descent through the remainder of Andorra. The Coll del Canto will test the climbing legs with 26.3 km distance and 1100 meters of ascent. Our destination is Sort in Spain. The mountains in Spain can be long and hot and the next offering is certainly in that category. Puerto de la Bonaigua peaks at 2072 meters, is 23 kms long and requires an ascent of 1122 meters. The reward though is a 23 km descent to Vielha.
The next day sees us back in France attacking the Peyresourde and Portillon. Our destination is Arreau and the Hotel de France where there will be some serious bragging going on after this days climbing.
Our last day on the bike is definitely a case of leaving the best till last! From Arreau we climb the Aspin followed by the Tourmalet. This is a route made famous in many editions of the TDF. Our descent takes us to the town of Luz Saint Sauveur where we get to celebrate the weeks riding in the very heart of the Pyrenees.
